Floor Level Rounds

Sandy Island Camp is a beautiful 66-acre island on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire that is owned by the YMCA of Greater Boston. During the summer is used for week-long family vacations. We have been able to obtain the use of Sandy Island during pre-season for our Island Breeze square dance weekend.

On Friday evening you will leave your vehicle on the mainland and be transported to Sandy Island aboard the Big Sandy II boat. You will be returned to the mainland on Sunday afternoon. While on Sandy Island, all meals will be provided and served in the dining hall. Dancing will take place in the "Lodge" which has an excellent wood floor for dancing. Accommodations will be in small private cabins which are located at the water's edge spread out around the island shore. There are numerous recreational activities available such as bocce, shuffleboard, horseshoes, volleyball, tennis and swimming, as well as a square and round dancing program provided by Skip, Dennis, Bob, Betty Ann, and Jennie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we park our cars? The boat to bring you to Sandy Island will depart from the public boat dock at Harilla Landing. This dock is located at the very end of "Moultonboro Neck Road", which is off of Route 25 between Center Harbor and Moultonboro, NH. Parking is along the access road leading to the boat dock. Specific driving directions will be sent prior to the start of the weekend.

What time do we need to arrive on Friday? We will have two or three scheduled boat pickups on Friday, between 4:00 and 9:00PM. I will be polling all the registrants as to what time they expect they can arrive to determine the most appropriate times to schedule the boat pickups.

What are the cabin accommodations like? Most cabins are one or two rooms, some of them have a curtain to seperate the two rooms while others have an actual wall. The cabins have metal cots with matresses, and plenty of blankets are provided. Fresh linens will be provided upon your arrival.

What are the bathroom facilities like? Only a small number of cabins have actual bathrooms in them; I will reserve these cabins for the people who need them the most. There are several centrally located bath facilities on the island all of which have flush toilets, running water, and showers. There are also a number of mini-lavs strategically located which have a flush toilet and sink. Most cabins are fairly close to a bath house or mini-lav. The main lodge building also has bathrooms in it.

Are there laundry facilities? The main bath houses have a coin operated washer and dryer, a wash is 50 cents and a dry is 50 cents.

Are there telephones available? There are pay telephones available for use on the island. Additionally, most cell phone carriers provide signal coverage to the area. An emergency phone contact number will be provided.

Is there electricity on the island? Yes.

Are there any cars on the island? There is no bridge to the island from the mainland. There are a few camp service vehicles on the island, but that's it.

Are pets allowed? My contract with the camp specifically states that pets are not permitted.

What items should we bring? You will be provided with a list of items to bring prior to the start of the weekend. One necessity is a good flashlight, as the camp paths are not lighted at night.

What will the dress code be? Since Sandy Island Camp is a semi-rustic setting, we are planning for a very casual weekend.
